Life in S.W Utah

Ice Fog,,,,,,,AGAIN

When I lived in Ohio, I only seen ice fog once.  I was flying for a living at that time.  It looked a lot different than the Ice Fog we get out here in the valley.  If we get up in the morning and can’t see the neighbors to the east, we know we have fog.  And that’s before daylight.  We seem to see it a lot more in the winter than the summer.  But anyhow, here are a few Ice Fog pictures.

100_4225

100_4227

100_4231

100_4229And there are a few of the better pics.  I still have a few more.

Wait till tomorrow.  Have a picuture of 2 eggs from Mom’s Hen House.  I think they will make you smile, maybe just a little.

Couple Trial Pictures

I was trying to take my  Photography a step up with these.  As you can see, it was a gallant effort, but not sure I got the “Jest” of them.  Just know I tried.  lol

icicle drip

If you look you can see the drip.

Another drip

This drip is a little harder to see, but it is there, trust me.

Drip about to drop

This is getting ready to drop.  Catching a drip is as hard as trying to get a still shot of lightening in the sky.

I think you will have to admit though, the sky is a beautiful color of blue.

More Snow Pic

Yesterday was an interesting day to say the least.  It snow flurried all day.  By the time of the PM feeding, our footprints from morning were almost covered.  We shoveled a path from the back door to front of the truck, and by evening it was totally clear where shoveled.  The mountains were totally obscured all day till about 5pm.

Here are a few more of the pictures we took on the way to AM feeding.

Bird feeder holderThis is a hook stand that is used to hang bird feeders on.

Chicken netting coverThis was the bird netting that covered the outside of the chicken pen.  The snow was so heavy that is took down all the netting.  The only good thing is, our chickens don’t care for the snow.  We have a couple days before the chickens venture outside.  We have a little doorway that is kept open all the time for them to go in and out as they choose.  The last big snow we had, it was about 5 days before they ventured outside, even though the door was open for them.

Chicken coop front sideThis is the front of chicken coop, what a mess.

I have added some more pictures in the Gallery instead of taking up space here. They can be viewed by clicking here.

Have a nice day

Well,,,,,,,,,

Please refer to yesterdays post about the nice weather and the fact that “we will see what tomorrow brings”.

We had some light rain showers yesterday late.  The time stamp on the pic below is 3:54 PM.  We had just gotten finished feeding.  We decided to feed a tad early due to the ominous looking sky.

Rainbow

This is what is left of a rainbow that came fast and left faster.  The next picture below is what the same area looked like about 8:45AM this morning.

Rainbow all Gone!

Just in case you may not have noticed, the landscape has changed just a little bit.  The snow started about 4PM as a mixture of drizzle and snow mixed.  By 6PM, it was a full fledged blizzard.  We couldn’t see the other side of the road in front of house.  Just before dark, there was about 3 inches on the bench out front.  This is what it looked like this morning.  It’s still snowing, and the valleys around Cedar City are due to have and ADDITIONAL 3-5 in. today, with a winter storm warning up for us till 5PM.

When it first started last night it was pretty wet and the flakes were big.  I wanted to get these pics up.  I have more and will get them up tomorrow to take care of my post for tomorrow.

Nice Weather

Boy, has it been nice outside the last couple days.  We had a few rain drops the last couple days, but just enough to wet the concrete.

Our muck has pretty much dried up to where we don’t need muck boots for either feeding now.  Snow is all but gone.

Moved some more horse hay down yesterday.  Temps were in the mid 50’s for a short time mid day.  They were 40’s for the morning feeding.  Is nice not having to break ice on water for animals.

Temps are supposed to take a dive again this week, so we haven’t seen the end of winter yet.

Guess will see what tomorrow brings.

Later

All Better Now

First thing I did this morning was access this site.  I had no problem getting in, or showing in browser.  Google worked their magic as only they can do and removed the BIG, obnoxious red tag from everywhere.

So,, this site has a clean bill of health from the health “gods” (said sarcastically)

That is the first time I have had a site hacked.  It’s like being raped.  Feels like you have been violated, invaded.  The weird thing is, that the page they hacked was nothing more than a simple template being used as place marker, its not even out in cyber space, I mean its not being promoted.  It was just so I had something in the root directory.

Oh well, as frustrating as it was, its all better now.  It had its bath and smells all pretty again.

Interesting Turn of Events

Sorry this post is so late.  Seems like a splash page in my root directory was hacked, and that threw up a red flag when I tried to access this site from FF.

I found the code and deleted it, and all should be good now.  I have requested a review  from Google to see if I can get the BIG red flag removed.

I’m sorry for any problems it may have caused.  All was good with it yesterday, and all should be good now also.  I can access it from IE7 now, just not FireFox.

This is not a political blog, and I intentionally keep it that way.  I’m not looking for controversial topics here, but I have to comment on this.

A great thing happened to our Country yesterday.  New hope was instilled in a lot of people.  Whether that hope is misplaced or not, it is still there.  Assurances, if not promises, were made.  I can only wish the new Administration all the Luck the Good Lord can bestow.

The one thing people need to NEVER forget.  This dire situation we find the country in today, didn’t happen overnight.  It will NOT be corrected overnight either.  If truth be admitted, it will probably take longer to fix than it did to get this way to begin with.

I am really excited with this new Administration.  It will be exciting to see how the President handles an over full plate of problems.

Again, I wish him all the luck.

Mesquite Pics

Here are a pictures taken yesterday at the Casino. We had a nice day, was a nice diversion.  Since we don’t do this very often, it was all the nicer and a nice treat for us.

We got there about 9am NV time and left at 2PM NV time.  So it’s not a real long day.  If you are winning, it’s not long enough, but then again, if you are loosing, it makes for a long day.  For us, it was just right.Jerry, Nancy, Bev and Cindy

Just a Few Updated Pictures

Thought it was about time to get some updated pictures from around the farm.  The snow is starting to melt, as you can see, and it was a beautiful day and a good day to try some new pictures.

All the girls

The girls are “trained” to the words “Chickie Birds”.  When you are standing outside, if you say that, they come running to where ever you are.  That is what we say when they are going to get fed something besides layer mash.  Only this time, Shari fooled them by not feeding, just wanted to get them all outside in one spot so she could take their pictures.  Shame on you Shari.

SweetiePie and Buttercup (poor cows)

Sweetie Pie (in background) and the Calf, Buttercup.  Buttercup is growing like a weed but still cute as a button.  She looks more and more like a Hereford everyday, more so than her mom.

Buttercup

Isn’t she just about the cutest?  Don’t pay any attention to mom in the background.  She is camera shy and that is not her best angle.

100_4134

In this picture you will find, Ammy, Morino, Stormy, Caroline, Princess, (the real dark one), Mouton, and Buela.  Buela is the matriarc of the group and mom to the 4 grayish ones.  The 2 white and one black are the ones born last spring.  Just don’t ask who belongs to whom, I can only tell you that one of the white ones,  is Stormy and was the bummer that we put with the mom that lost her 3 prior to birth.  Mouton is the other white one, then Princess, the black one.  I might add that all the girls here are pregnant.  Due to start lambing about the middle of March.

Dakota and Neechie

Here are our two girls.  Neechie in the front and Dakota in the rear.  These pictures were taken right after feeding time and they are still happily munching away.  Maybe you can see how dirty Neechie is.  They love to roll in the muck.

Dusty

Dusty in all his glory.  Eating!  And not in the proper stall.  But that is ok, the Girls are outside on the “Patio” eating what he left, so all is good.

100_4150

As you can see here, the snow is starting to melt.  All that brown gets smooshie in the evening and requires the muck boots.  This picture is taken looking North. The house is behind.

Front of House

This is the front of house.  It faces East.  Shari is standing in the road to take this picture.

And there you have a quick run down of our little farm, in our little corner of the world.  Welcome to SW Utah

Mesquite Bound

Monday the 19th, the Senior Citizens bus has a trip to Mesquite Nv to visit one of the Casinos’.  Since Bev is the bus driver, she will be going and Shari and I will be “taggin” along  (hehe Ya right).

The bus goes to St. George where we pick up a special charter bus that takes us on into Mesquite.  It arrives about 9am NV time and leaves at 3pm.  This trip happens about 4 times a year.  This will be my second time.  It’s a fun day.  As part of the package, we get a free buffet lunch that is out of this world.  There are other freebies in the coupon book.

This time thought, we are going to be meeting up with Nancy and Jerry Banes for lunch.  They have a condo about 15 minutes from the casino.  Will be fun seeing them again.  For those that may not remember, Jerry and Nancy were our “across the street” neighbors when we lived on the Island.  I’m looking forward to it.

Since we have to leave home BEFORE daylight (uggg) we are going to collect on a “return the favor” from our neighbor to feed the animals in the morning.

This time we are going to take the camera and get a few pictures from the Casino and of Jerry and Nancy.  Will include a Gazette if we can find one.

Wish us lots of luck.

Sunrises and Sunsets

As mentioned in previous posts, the sunrises and sunsets out here on the desert are breath taking.

This picture is the first in a series of about 10 that I took of the same sunset. The time on this one is 7:49pm

The picture below is the last in the series.  Oh my, how it changed looks. This picture was taken 10 minutes later.

Bev Feeds This Morning

Bev got the privilege of feeding horses this morning.  I was on the phone with my son, Shawn.  Seems he as picked up a few Trojans, and wanted to know how to shed them.

It was pretty mild this morning.  The ground was still solid, but water wasn’t frozen.  We have “quick disconnect” fittings on the frost free’s at the horses and sheep.  It doesn’t take a lot of cold to freeze up those little ball bearings that lock around the collar of hose.  I have found that if you run just a second of water through the frost free, it is usually enough to free them up and will take the hose easily.

Usually it gets warm enough during the day that if the hose is left laying straight out during the day it is fine for the night watering.  Then at the PM feeding, the hose gets drained, disconnected and hung up inside the barn.

It’s a lot better than 2 yrs ago when we had 200′ of hose stretched out from the greenhouse to the barn.  That was a nightmare to drain a hose that long and still have it freeze up.

New Blog

I have decided to do another Blog.  That one will be about Green Energy, Living Green, Solar and Wind energy.  That way I can keep this one original and post for the reason it was made. To keep family and friends in Ohio updated on our adventures in the Great SW Desert area, and our little family farm we have started.

Please feel free to stop by and read, as I will keep it updated, it won’t go by the wayside.

In the meantime, here is another picture you might enjoy.

100_2945This picture can be found in the archives, but since I have been mentioning the little brat in the last few posts, I thought I would show you that he Can behave if he wants to.

This was the very first ride on him.

Another Day

Nice, nice morning today.  Not really cold although there was ice on the buckets.  I was looking at Toledo 11 online today.  It looks like all you folks in NW Ohio are in for some real nasty weather.  My heart goes out to you. (smile)  I talked to Shawn this morning, he was out in the bay fishing.  He didn’t get anything and was packing up to come in.  Ice was slushie, wind was blowing and it was cold.  I figured it must really be nasty, because he is a die hard ice fisherman.  I had to chuckle tho.

By Jove,,,,,,,,,I Think He’s Got It

There is hope for Trusty Dusty after all.  I think he has finally “Got” it.  At least this morning he has.  Will see how long his memory retention is at tonight’s feeding.

A quick rundown of Dusty’s life so far.

Got him as a yearling in 2005. Never been handled, no haltering, no feet trimming, no shots, and couldn’t be touched.  Since then he has progressed through a lot of ground work, and has been ridden 4-5 times.  He has been a perfect gentleman during those first rides.

He still has  somewhat of an attitude problem, but its the Kid-ness in him.  He isn’t aggressive, or mean, and he knows what he is supposed to do, he is waiting to see if I know how to encourage him to do it.

I hope to be able to take him outside the round pen for the first time riding him when the weather breaks in the spring.

Was looking at the heifer today.  My she is growing fast.  Almost as tall as mom now.  It is fun to watch her play by herself and run around the pen.  She has been seen sneaking a friendly Hello with the sheep in the next pen when mom isn’t looking or is too far to intervene.

It’s about time for some pictures of her and mom too.  Will see about that today since it looks like its gonna be a nice day.

Later,

Cindy

And,,,The Lesson Continues

Another morning of  “Life Lessons” for Dusty.  He did really well at feeding this morning.  Didn’t have to “chase” him out of stalls today.  All I did was point the direction of  “his” stall and he backed out and stood there.

I showed him I had put hay in his stall, and he went right to it.

Dusty’s Lessons Continue

Oh Yes, he got upset again this morning, but I don’t care.  He needs to learn his place at feeding time.  This morning though he only had to be reminded 2x.  He went outside the stalls and stood there and waited.  He bucked and complained some, but got the general idea.  Will continue to work on it.  Should be all better by spring.  Like I said, he catches on fairly fast.

Check out my Blog roll, I added a couple more sites for you to check out.
